iQOS holographic projection

We may still be years away from actual commercially available holograms, but until then, the top-down projection on a well-polished glass pyramid is the best price/performance solution one can get for a reasonable amount of money.

We were approached by agency NewMomment to adopt one of their videos for projection on a holographic projector "Holospace"  to be used in their showroom. But there was a problem. TV advertisement was not at all suitable for adaptation so we offered to create a short presentational video from scratch.

The technique

"Pyramid projection" used in Holospace products is a simple solution that can gap the bridge between a classic 2d projection and a real holographic projection, which is still prohibitively expensive and virtually unusable for commercial purpose. The most common technique is making a special edit where you arrange your source video into an array of 4 videos ( or 3 in case of Holospace) and then project it top down on a glossy pyramid tilted at app. 45 degrees. Having the luxury of in-house 3d graphics department we prefer a little more advanced version where each of the videos in the array represents a different viewing angle ( front, left, right, back). We can accomplish this by rendering the scene with 4 different cameras. Either way, the resulting holographic projection gives the viewer illusion of floating 3d objects and is a very effective tool to attract attention in a showroom.

Conclusion

We were hired to do a holographic projection adaptation of a TV advertisement but ended up creating the whole thing from the scratch.
